The Andraz Castle/Schloss Buchenstein is a rock in the forest, erratic stone, pushed and left where it is, among woods and streams and peaks, by a strip of ice that once was; over the rocky boulder, the humans have elevated even more, to sight the horizon; now, from the hollow rock, one sights the sky; an aeronautic ruin, that is open once again, after a restoration 27 years long; the stones fastened to the boulder; slices of attics; the hollow section, vertical projection of the space, invaded by the light that falls from above; the transparency of the glass and iron roofing, the air that flows fast and cold from inside the walls, and this factitious insertion, which is the most interesting thing, the human ingrown in the stone, not the uninhabited ruin, the ruin fastened to the sky by the technological membrane, the today into that yesterday, not a castle in style, with the Alpine hat and the zimmer, but a post, which now becomes a critical nest: in 1595 the chief of the stronghold lamented the lack of an aviary; here it is, the aviary, ready for the hatching, the open cage, crossed by these new shape-actions, from which one looks at this space, at the environment, the history, and the genius loci, and the machine springs to life, new presences, and the section activates itself, the ruin speaks, moves (in every sense of the word) and describes.
“Et un’oseliera et non vi é” (old spoken Italian, non-literal translation: “e aviary e there is note”) is the third exhibit of Dolomiti Contemporanee’s summer cycle. In Casso, permanent centre and base camp, there’s the principal Residence: from there all the other activities are organized, from there artists take off, every day, to explore the dolomitic sites in which the other exhibits are developed. The Andraz Castle is one of the strong locations of 2013, one of the “temporary houses” of this environmental workshop, that continuously moves and experiments. The Castle is a spectacular fortress, whose condition of ruin is more than ever suitable to host an expository project of contemporary art. The artists trigger their ideas there, overwriting them, creating dialogues and caesurae with the history of this powerful location, finally reopen, after a renovation that lasted 27 years. A closed place which opens itself once again, here’s the first affinity with DC. An evocative place, in which imagination speeds up, and that art is able to turn on, through a critical and non-stereotypical reflection, as it is in DC2013 general concept. In this case, as for Casso, Cortina, Brigata Alpina Cadore, the exhibit is built in part through a Residence in loco. Art is sounding, is a method to intend the culture and the life of things and places. During the inauguration, two multimedia performances will be carried out.
